For the first time in over 30 years, the 600 block of Main Street in downtown Buffalo will be open to vehicular traffic again! This long anticipated event will be marked by Mayor Byron W. Brown and Rep. Brian Higgins took the first car down the block at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2015 as the traffic gate opens.
These gates will be in place when a Metro Rail train emerges from the underground tunnel to the 600 block of Main Street. Once the train is safely pass, the gate will left and cars can continue down Main Street. As construction continues on the 500 block of Main Street, cars will need to turn off at Chippewa Street.
Main Street between Chippewa and Tupper streets is the home of such businesses as Shea’s Performing Arts Center, the Market Arcade, Tralfamadore Café, Irish Classical Theatre Company and Bijou Grill and will now share the road with trains, cars, bicycles and pedestrians!
