Post Holiday Social with Joseph E. Gambacorta and his proposal for Sabres Sports Museum

January 28, 2008

Metro Buffalo has a hearty group of sports fan fanatics so why not dedicate a space to the glorious history of one of our best loved teams downtown? Working For Downtown?s post holiday social gave us a chance to ponder that question and also a chance to look at a phenomenal collection of Buffalo Sabres memorabilia.

Joseph E. Gambacorta, DDS walked us through the timeline of his amazing Buffalo Sabres collection at the annual gathering at the New Era Cap Company on Monday, January 28.

The display included an amazing collection of programs, jerseys and a glimpse at part of Dr. Joe?s ?French Connection? collection. He is hoping to convince the city, developers, or just interested hockey fans, in building momentum to devote a permanent space for the collection, hopefully right near their hometown ice on Buffalo?s waterfront.

Joe Gambacorta is of course the brother of our own board member extraordinaire, Maria Gambacorta.

The holiday gala was a good chance to meet up with the many ?movers and shakers? that make up the diverse Working For Downtown group. Who better to introduce the idea of a Sabres museum to than a group that includes some of the hottest Buffalo developers in town?

Attending the soiree were Sarah Couch, Working For Downtown Vice President and honcho for Ellicott Development, Bill Jones, who heads up the WFD Waterfront Committee. Erie County Clerk Kathy Hochul, who was in the forefront of the effort to dump the tolls on the Ogden and Breckenridge toll barriers, was there chatting it up with fellow Working For Downtown advocates.

No Tolls Barrier Anniversary Celebration

October 30, 2007

Working For Downtown and The Buffalo Rotary hosted a 1st Anniversary Party to celebrate the removal of the Ogden and the Breckenridge toll booths.

The fun event was held Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at the Market Arcade Atrium across from the Shea?s Performing Arts Center. The public has been invited to join the celebration and enjoy free cake.

As a reminder of the savings that the No Tolls movements has created, Working For Downtown Board Member and Former President, Jill Benker-Beck presented a huge ceremonial check for $12 million made payable to the taxpayers of Western New York. The $12 million figure is a conservative estimate of the savings based on the last year that tolls were collected. Some traffic experts believe that this savings could be even greater as area residents re-routed their travel into Downtown Buffalo to take advantage of the toll removal.

The No Tolls Anniversary Celebration program honored the efforts of Western New Yorkers, including Attorney Mike Powers and Kathy Hochul, former Hamburg Councilwoman and current Erie County Clerk, involved in the No Tolls movement.
