Buffalo Walks Tour: Fontana Boathouse

Buffalo Walks Tour: Fontana Boathouse

Monday, August 4, 2014

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fontana Boathouse is his only rowing boathouse design and one that he considered truly one of his best and most beloved works. You will have the rare chance to see one of his designs in use for its originally intended purpose – an actual rowing facility – and hear the fascinating story of how it came to life in Buffalo after more than 100 years.  Designed in 1905 for the University of Wisconsin, it opened in 2007 on the shores of the Niagara River.

Reminder: WFD Member Renewal

Welcome Working for Downtown Members:

2013 was a fantastic year in Buffalo! We have experienced some wonderful new restaurants downtown.  There has also been a lot of progress made near the waterfront and soon cars will be back on Main Street. WFD also developed this wonderful new website which offers an easy way to help us promote Downtown Buffalo and communicate with our members and supporters. We ask that you continue to come and socialize with members and supporters of WFD every Thursday at Papaya for our Thursdays in the City weekly event. We would love to see you there!

Working for Downtown continues to promote downtown through some fantastic tours such as Silo City and The Graystone Hotel. We are starting to investigate potential tour sites for 2014 and please contact us if you have any suggestions. The Brown Bag lunch series continues into 2014. Please see our BBL section for a list of the new speakers and dates.

It is time for our annual WFD membership renewal. This year we are offering an online renewal option and we hope you will find the website a convenient way to renew your membership. Please click here to complete your online renewal.

If you would prefer, you can still mail your payment to: Working for Downtown PO Box 173, Buffalo, NY 14203, along with your most current information.

Thank you in advance for another year of your support. We look forward to seeing you at upcoming WFD events in 2014!

Sincerely,

Working for Downtown Board of Directors

ULI Outer Harbor Forum – Tues Dec 3rd 8a-10a

The Urban Land Institute (ULI) Western New York is hosting the Outer Harbor Forum.  For more information, please click here.

Buffalo’s Outer Harbor, including over 130 acres of the area’s largest urban waterfront land tract, is about to be developed as the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority transfers the land to the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation, a subsidiary of Empire State Development.  Governor Cuomo said he hopes to see the ECHDC provide a mixed-use development plan for this land including a public access component along with some residential and commercial development.  The land has sat largely unused for decades. What will it become? The process to determine how the land will be developed to cement Buffalo’s reputation as a true waterfront city will soon begin.  With input from Buffalo’s Chief Planner, Brendan Mehaffy, ECHDC’s Chair, Robert Gioia, as well as Uwe Brandes, a nationally respected planner with waterfront development experience in Buffalo, NYC, and D.C., we hope to kick start this conversation.

The event will include a continental breakfast, presentations, and panel discussion set in front of some of the Outer Harbor’s best views on the 37th floor of One Seneca Tower.

MODERATOR: Stephen Fitzmaurice, COO, Seneca One Realty LLC

PANELISTS: Uwe Brandes, Executive Director, Masters of Professional Studies in Urban and Regional Planning, Georgetown University Robert Gioia – Chairman, Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation Brendan Mehaffy – Executive Director, Office of Strategic Planning, City of Buffalo
